Safety Information for Parents

We welcome you to visit Antioch Education Abroad's Phone Protocol page, which includes after-hours contact information.

Dear Parents,

Study abroad is a life-changing experience. Fostering maturity and independence, developing cross-cultural perspective, enhancing foreign language ability and generating global experience in a competitive job market are all important reasons to invest in study abroad. At Antioch Education Abroad (AEA), we understand that excitement for your sons’ and daughters’ experiential education is paired with concern for their health and wellbeing.

We feel a deep sense of commitment and personal responsibility for each participant in our study abroad programs. AEA administrative staff, located in Yellow Springs, Ohio, is in continual communication with our program directors to respond to potential difficulties as they arise through a well-developed international network. We also monitor overseas conditions on a daily basis to ensure up-to-date, relevant information. Your sons’ and daughters’ safety is our primary concern.

Toward this aim, AEA staff has developed a set of response procedures and incident prevention policies, which are adopted by onsite program directors, local staff and administrative staff. On every AEA program, students receive thorough orientation to all program sites. Students are also registered with local agencies upon arrival and are issued emergency contact information to keep with them at all times. In addition, field courses are periodically assessed to determine safety, and every reasonable precaution is taken regarding the purchase, preparation and consumption of local foods.

Program directors are highly experienced and are trained to respond effectively and immediately to incidents should they occur. Local staff, closely connected with the host community, is available at all times to support program directors as needs arise. Moreover, the Yellow Springs staff is here to support you as parents as well, and we welcome any questions or concerns you might have prior to, during and after your sons’ and daughters’ participation in an AEA program.

Overall, participation on an AEA program can be one of the most rewarding aspects of an undergraduate education, shaping an expanded worldview through the integration of rigorous study, cross-cultural perspective and hands-on education. We welcome all of your questions and concerns and invite you to contact us by phone at (937) 769-1015 or by email at AEA@antioch.edu. Finally, we thank you for considering all that Antioch Education Abroad has to offer.

Sincerely,

AEA Staff & Faculty
