Student Resources // Health & Counseling

The Counseling Center is located in North Hall. Counselors offer short term counseling for individuals, couples and groups, and respond to individual and community crises that may arise.  Phone: 1130 (937-769-1130). Staff: Linda Sattem, Ph.D. PCC/S; Cheryl Smith, RN, LCDC; Ann Hembree, LSW, and Jenn Baker.

The Wellness Center in North Hall is a student-run space for relaxation, programming and fun, with activities that focus on developing health and wellness as individuals, small groups and as a community. Phone: 1130 (937-769-1130)  Staff: Linda Sattem.

Medical and health services for the Antioch student studying on campus are provided by the Antioch Infirmary (North Hall) and the Yellow Springs Family Health Center staff (three blocks from campus, at the corner of Xenia Ave. and Marshall St.). Many minor health problems can be handled at the Infirmary, so it is advisable to approach Infirmary staff if possible before heading to the Family Health Center. Antioch Infirmary staff is available on weekdays from 9:00 am--5:00 pm, or as posted; phone 1198 (937-769-1198). Also, Infirmary or Student Affairs staff can help students schedule their first-time appointment at the Yellow Springs Family Health Center. Infirmary staff: Julie Reed, RN, and Joyce Morrissey.

If you are sick after 5 or on weekends, you might first try contacting the Yellow Springs Family Health Center's answering service, which can connect you to a physician on call (937-767-7369). If the physican's call back time isn't fast enough or you want help immediately, you could also consider finding a ride to Doctor's Urgent Care across from the Kroger off of Dayton-Yellow Springs Rd. (2131 Gateway Dr., 873-9500, 8:30 am--10:00 pm daily) or in Springfield (2555 Creekwood Ct., 327-0552, open 9:00 am--9:00 pm). You may also try Greene Memorial Emergency Room (Xenia, signs along Rte. 68, 24 hours a day though wait times can be 2-3 hours). In an emergency, call 911.  When visiting off-campus health services, you must bring proof of insurance or cash and a driver's license or other form of identification.

Some notes on health insurance: All Antioch students have Part I insurance through Antioch College, which covers all visits to the campus Infirmary and basic visits to the Yellow Springs Family Health Center.  Students automatically purchase Part II Major Medical insurance with a group called Commercial Travelers through the College unless you submit a waiver each Fall to verify that you have sufficient Part II coverage elsewhere, such as through a parent's employee benefits.

If you use a medic other than the Infirmary or Health Center, get medicines, or need lab work or surgery, you will most likely be drawing upon your Part II Major Medical insurance coverage to compensate for the expense.

  • If your Part II insurance provider is Commercial Travelers through Antioch College, you must send Commercial Travelers a copy of each bill with a claims form attached in order to apply for reimbursement AFTER your in-depth doctor visit, lab work, surgery, and/or filled prescription.  Claims forms are available here or in the Office of Student Affairs. Even after benefits are applied, you will usually end up having had to pay a deductible and some percentage of the total bill yourself.  However, you will get the most coverage if you use a network medical provider--check with www.beechstreet.com or 800-432-1776 if you have time to find a qualifying physician beforehand.  Antioch insurance does not include vision or dental coverage.  Also, you should also have your insurance card with you at all times and present it at the time of service.
  • If you chose to use a different Part II insurance provider by waiving your Part II insurance through the College, speak to your alternate insurance provider to obtain any necessary paperwork or benefit information.

You can contact the Office of Student Affairs if you need to take out a short-term loan to help with up front expenses. For more information about Antioch College's insurance plan, visit www.studentplanscenter.com or contact the Office of Student Affairs, 1160 (937-769-1160) or <saffairs@antioch-college.edu>.
