Vision and Mission Statement
Mission Statement:
The mission of the Coretta Scott King Center is to lead Antioch, located in Yellow Springs, Ohio, and the surrounding communities through programming, teaching and research by creating an environment in which members come to understand freedom by developing strategies that facilitate diversity, instill responsibility, and reinforce equality and justice.
Vision Statement:
By the year 2012, The Coretta Scott King Center for Cultural and Intellectual Freedom will become the premier vehicle for interdisciplinary social justice education in the world.
Goals:
It is the realization of the Coretta Scott King Center’s specific goals and objectives that will allow Antioch College and the Center to become the catalyst for awareness, education and change in light of cultural and intellectual freedom that the founders intended.
- Provide students with ethical decision making approaches that will be directly applied in the classroom, during co-operative education studies and in the lives they build after leaving Antioch. We believe that this will help build sustainable communities on campus and beyond where promising students from diverse backgrounds will be drawn and feel supported.
- Provide faculty and staff with practical resources to aid their exploration of issues related to cultural and intellectual freedom, equity and diversity with students or for their own personal and professional development. We believe that faculty who incorporate community-based learning, as a means to enhance theory and practice, will help to create culturally and intellectually stimulating environments where all students can grow and develop. We therefore extend support to faculty in their efforts to incorporate community-based learning as well as aspects of cultural and intellectual freedom through education. We further pledge to support efforts to retain a culturally diverse faculty and staff community by recognizing, acknowledging, and celebrating the unique qualities that individuals bring to Antioch and the Yellow Springs community.
- Provide an arena for and Participate in community-based conversations that prompt individuals to think critically about their shared responsibility in creating and sustaining “socially just” local, national and global communities while acknowledging opportunities to act accordingly. We believe that community outreach is essential as we seek to contribute to an inclusive community that extends to the surrounding Village of Yellow Springs and areas beyond so we can partner to work toward a true realization of freedom.
