Dance at Antioch

Fall Dance Concert November 30 - December 1, 2007

The Antioch College Fall Dance Concert will take place on November 30 and December 1st at 8:00 in the Antioch College South Gym.  The concert will feature modern dances, Hip Hop and West African Drum and Dance.  Tickets are $7.00 general admission and $5 for children, students and Senior Citizens.  For more information, please call Jill Becker at 937-769-1026.  (Bleacher seats; you may want to bring to bring your own cushion.)

About the concert:

Guest artist Colleen Leonardi will present Reminds Me of Ohio, a dance for five Antioch students,  which plays with movement and the many ways it can move us from one event to the next and the next, until one finds oneself seeing things a bit differently.  The music is by Boards of Canada.  She will also present a solo, Thinking Through Trisha, an ongoing solo project inspired by the dances of the well-known choreographer Trisha Brown.

Students in Kelsa Rieger's Intoduction to Hip Hop Dance & Culture will perform a high energy piece rooted in the movement and culture of Chicago's house-music scene.

Under the direction of Suzan Bradford and Master Drummer Abdou Kounta, students will perform traditional music and dances of West Africa.

Jill Becker will present a suspenseful group piece which has sudden changes in dynamics where the dancers move from a sustained use of time to abrupt explosions of energy to contemporary music entitled String Quartet #4 by Latvian composer Peteris Vasks, performed by the Kronos String Quartet.  About his music, Vasks writes "....is there a point to composing a piece that only mirrors our being one step away from extinction?  To my mind, every honest composer searches for a way out of his time's crises.  Towards affirmation, towards faith.  He shows how humanity can overcome this passion for self-annihilation that flares up in a column of smoke from time to time."

Students Beth Goodney, Erin Turner and Adam Rose will present original work.
