Noteworthy Alumni
Volume III
Antioch College celebrated its sesquicentennial in 2003-2004 with alumni returning to campus from all over the country to speak about how Antioch helped them find their place in the world. MacArthur fellows Mark Strand ’57, Wendy Ewald ’74, Sylvia Law ’64 and Lisa Delpit ’74 presented to packed audiences. International Women’s Day Speaker Emma Amos ’58, 2004 Chatterjee Peace Lecturer and Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton ’60, and Norton’s biographer Joan Steinau Lester ’62 were met with a similar enthusiasm. There were exhibitions featuring the work of Antioch cartoonists such as Edwin Fisher ’49 and Jennifer Berman ’84, among others, and an exhibit designed for Antioch Hall that boasts eleven courageous alumni including Stephen Jay Gould ’63, yet another MacArthur Fellow. The year also included a two-part panel discussion The Courage of Social Scientists that brought a host of prominent social scientists together on the stage of Kelly Hall. The year of celebrations was capped off by a visit from Coretta Scott King ’51 at Reunion 2004.
There was no shortage of renowned people on campus in Antioch’s sesquicentennial year and this publication, Noteworthy Alumni Volume III, strives to share a part of these celebrations with you. To echo the words printed on the opening panel for the Courageous Antiochians exhibit: “Courage can be an elusive concept. It means the fortitude to stand up for a belief or against injustice. It means forging ahead with new ideas or facing unknown dangers.” Through a nomination process that called upon the expertise of faculty, staff, students, and members of the Board of Trustees and the Alumni Board, this publication celebrates just a few of the courageous Antiochians who have accomplished diverse victories in their fields. It is, of course, impossible to tell the stories of every Antioch graduate who has and is making a difference. The list compiled here is by no means complete. It represents a mere sampling of those who we count among the courageous.
Nina Harawa ’92 expresses a common sentiment among alumni when she states, “I look at things in the world and think how I could change them. That attitude was instilled and strengthened at Antioch.”
