Alumni Association

Antioch College is one of the most distinctive colleges in the United States. For Alumni, the years spent as a student are among the most exciting and challenging of our lives. We all leave Antioch with strong feelings about the College and a sense that we have formed a unique identity. At few other colleges in the country are the alums known by a distinctive name. But all of us, from the moment we enter Antioch, become Antiochians and we stay that way for the rest of our lives.

There is something about Antioch -- Is it the sense of community? The sense of finding kindred spirits? Folk Dancing on Friday? The challenge of trying to study, to work, to travel around the world? Trying to live up to the famous Horace Mann dictum? The beer at the Tavern? Ha Ha Pizza? The Saturday Night movie? All of the above? None of the above?

It is hard to describe the connection that each of us feels for Antioch. It is reflected in the Class Notes that appear in each issue of the Antiochian. You can feel it when you come back for Reunion. You know it when you meet other Antiochians.

One of the purposes of the Alumni Association is to encourage and promote that connection. Its goal is to keep that connection alive and to give it a practical quality by organizing programs and services for Alumni. Another purpose is to represent Alumni views to the College and to develop ways that Alumni can be involved with current students.

What is the Antioch College Alumni Association?

It is an organization whose purpose is to promote a lifelong, active relationship between Antioch College and its alumni. It provides opportunities for you to share responsibility for the well being of the College.

The Association's Board of Directors, working with College staff, develops projects and initiatives in which alumni can share their skills and experience in helping meet needs of the College. Some current and past projects have been: Alumni Admissions Associates, Co-op Job Development, Alumni College, Reunion, Class Giving, Student Orientation, and Student Health Day.

The Association also promotes communication among alumni and between the College and all of us. One of the ways is does this is through its various Committees.

Who belongs to the Association?

YOU DO. Anyone who attended Antioch for one year or longer is a member. Graduation is NOT a requirement. There are NO dues; you automatically become a member for life. Currently there are approximately 14,000 alumni worldwide.

How is the Association structured?

The Alumni Board consists of 21 to 30 members, elected by alumni. The Board, in turn, elects the Officers of the Association. The President of the Alumni Association sits on the University Board of Trustees as a voting, ex-officio member.

The Alumni Board is responsible for selecting people to be chosen for four Alumni Awards given each year at Reunion. A description of the Awards is included in this site.

The Board meets on campus three times per year, October, March and in June at Reunion. As part of Reunion, there is an annual meeting of the Association.

How is one elected to the Alumni Board of the Association?

The Alumni Board nominates candidates to fill the positions on the Board. All alumni are encouraged to suggest candidates for the Board by sending names to the Alumni Relations Office at alumni@antioch-college.edu. Alumni may also self nominate.  Nominees are vetted through the Nominations Committee of the Alumni Board.

To be nominated a candidate should be involved with the College in some way -- attending Reunion, helping with Class Giving, working with the Co-op department, etc.

All alumni are sent a ballot with names of people who have been nominated for the Alumni Board.

How is the Association financed?

Since the Association does not collect dues, its activities are financed through the operating budget of the College.

What should we expect from the College?

Alumni can expect to receive the Antiochian, which includes news about all of us, by class year. Each publication also includes articles about what is happening on campus - programs, significant speeches, building updates, and information about faculty, students and staff. Special anniversary classes will receive letters from Class Representatives with information about the College as well as Reunion.

What does the College expect of us?

One of the most important things the College needs from us is our current address, now and in the future (so we can receive publications, invitations to Reunion, Class Representative letters, fundraising appeals, etc.) In addition, the College would like information about our jobs, degrees, marriages, children, careers, etc.

The College also needs us to support its programs and services, both on campus and off. It also needs our contributions to the Annual Fund and the Class Giving programs.

Whom do I contact for more information?

The staff of Institutional Advancement is eager to assist you. The Director of Alumni Relations is Risa Grimes and her phone number is 937-769-1206/1-800-411-6780. The mailing address is 795 Livermore Street, Yellow Springs, Ohio 45387. Office hours are 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday. The email address is alumni@antioch.edu.

We're Seeking Outstanding Alumni

As we compile our next edition of "Antioch College Noteworthy Alumni," we are turning to you for your suggestions of Alumni that you know or have heard about whose achievements are truly outstanding.

We also seek your input in recognizing persons for the college's four annual Alumni Awards as well as for individuals who would be potential candidates to serve on the Alumni Board.

The alumni awards consist of the Horace Mann Award, which recognizes a victory for humanity; the Arthur Morgan Award, which recognizes contribution to community; the J.D. Dawson Award, which recognizes contribution to the College; and the Rebecca Rice Award, which recognizes individuals who are outstanding in their profession.

If you would like to nominate an individual for an Alumni Award, please name the individual, the suggested award and a statement of why you are nominating the person. Please follow a similar procedure for nominating someone to serve on the Alumni Board - you may even want to nominate yourself! Please send your suggestions for Noteworthy Alumni, Alumni Awards or Alumni Board members to:
