An Open Letter to Alumni:
It is truly good and exciting news to once again be involved in providing a sound liberal arts education to Antioch students including placing students on co-op jobs! Developing enough jobs to interest and accommodate the 150 students who will need a placement in the Summer term presents the co-op faculty with a joyful task.
When the Board of Trustees made its announcement to suspend Antioch College, the news was quickly disbursed far and wide. Most of our employers have made plans with other schools or have hired full time replacements for the co-op job we filled with them.
We need help in creating this a set of summer jobs that can become year-round jobs for our students. The placement period runs from the first week in May through August 22. No defined work dates have been established yet, but those are reasonably close to what will be approved.
The most desirable arrangement would be for you to provide a co-op job through your organization. The next best option involves your direct discussion with a potential employer. Your testimony about the role co-op work experience played in your life and education is the best selling tool. Once a general interest or agreement has been reached, we can follow through to confirmation of the job. Of course, we will let you know the outcome of our joint effort.
Please keep these parameters in mind. We seek actual work that needs to be done rather than shadowing or work that does not contribute to the mission of the organization. Students must be paid enough to support themselves. Typically, students need to earn between $5000 and $6000 for four months of work. However this will vary based on the cost of living in a particular area and jobs that provide room and/or board can pay less. Students also need a good supervisor who will help them perform their jobs well and who will show an interest in the meaning and value of work experience for a student.
We are currently assessing student areas of interest and will soon share what we learn. We typically need jobs in the fine arts (galleries, summer arts programs, etc.) humanities (museums, publishing, archives, etc.) and communications (stations, studios, site support, etc.). Law and medical co-ops along with jobs in public and social services have always been valued. These are general parameters and we would be interested in learning about any job which you believe would be a valuable co-op option.
Please feel free to contact us.
