Institutional Scholarships

Community Responsibility Scholarship (CRS)

Award: Between $10,000 and $15,000 a year.

Community Responsibility Scholars are chosen based on a combination of the three central foundations of an Antioch education: academic engagement, community involvement, and meaningful work experiences.  Criteria for awarding the Community Responsibility Scholarships include:

1. Academic potential as demonstrated by a combination of high school and/or college performance, essays and letters of recommendation.

2. A demonstration of commitment to community life in a variety of ways, from engaging in explicit leadership roles in community to working behind the scenes in organizing efforts to build community.

3. Experience in the working world.

All students are automatically reviewed for a Community Responsibility Scholarship and no separate scholarship application is required. CRS scholarships include:

  • The Jewel Graham Community Responsibility Scholarship

Award: $15,000 a year.

The scholarship is named for Jewel Graham, Professor of Social Welfare and Legal Studies Emerita.  As a faculty member at Antioch College from 1969-1992, Jewel Graham mentored generations of students to engage as change agents in their communities.  In addition to her service to Antioch College, Graham is a leader both locally in Yellow Springs, nationally and internationally.  Jewel Graham is a model for engagement in community life.

  • The Algo Henderson Community Responsibility Scholarship

              Award: $12,000 a year.

Algo Henderson, President of Antioch College from 1936-1947, joined the faculty in 1925 as a professor of accounting.  Under Henderson the College developed the democratic governing principles by which students, faculty and staff participate in significant decision making.  Algo Henderson was the architect of Antioch’s democratic community governance system.

  • The Olympia Brown Community Responsibility Scholarship

Award: $10,000 a year.

Olympia Brown graduated from Antioch College in 1860.  She developed strong moral and political beliefs at Antioch, becoming an ardent abolitionist and women’s suffragist.  At age 28 she became the first woman in America to be ordained a minister by a regularly constituted ecclesiastical body—The Universalist Association.  After a lifetime of activism and service, she was one of the last survivors of the suffragist leadership to cast her vote in a U.S. election upon the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment.  Olympia Brown helped create Antioch’s legacy of service and activism from its original founding.
