James P. Keen
College Professor

B.A., Haverford College; Ed.D., Harvard University.

Teaching Focus

Throughout his career, Jim’s teaching focus has been interdisciplinary within the social sciences.

Scholarly Interests

He is co-author of Common Fire: Leading Lives of Commitment in a Complex World and a series of related articles, and has written a number of articles on Governor’s schools and other programs that engage young people in discourse on public policy, global issues, and the common good.

In addition to public policy and globalism, Jim’s scholarly interests embrace interdisciplinary epistemologies; intellectual, epistemological, and ethical development; and the study of peace, conflict and community. He shares with many of his colleagues at Antioch an interest in innovative education.

Academic Background

Immediately before coming to Antioch, he served as chair of the department of Interdisciplinary Studies at Manmouth University.

Jim has shared appointments with his partner, Cheryl Keen, in a number of settings for more than twenty years. From 1982 through 1995, they were founding co-directors of New Jersey’s Governor’s School of Public Issues. They also shared the Milicent Fenwick Research Professorship at Monmouth University. Prior to that, they taught together at Goddard College, Lesley College, and Harvard University. From 1973 through 1981, they served as co-administrators of Committee on Peace and Conflict Studies, and its successor, the Interdisciplinary Coordinating Committee on International studies of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Harvard.

Jim also served as Associate Director of the U.S. Team for the Club of Rome’s project, No Limits to Learning, and as chair of the board of the International Center for Integrative Studies.
